There is no vertical support, each shelf is just a L- shaped metal sheet (good example is the Invisible shelf from Umbra)

So, basically I have an attractive, sturdy shelf with 10 of the 11 shelves attached.

The second shelf gave me an issue when it became apparent that one screw for the base would not be long enough to attach the base

It arrived in pieces that were well packed and took some time to assemble but when it was done, I had a beautiful and sturdy shelf

Just put some really heavy books on the bottom (I used textbooks which finally came in handy) and that helped secure the shelf.
