The problem is the hard plastic component is simply painted instead of a uniform color throughout.

I've had it for months, dropped my phone many times, everything is intact and rose-gold paint has barely chipped

The gun metal painted border will lose the paint in 3 to 4 months of use

The months to follow it was been losing its finish/paint on the "gunmetal" portions, and a minor fall on the corner has now translated to replace phone (thanks to device insurance).
