I wasn't quite sure how that could happen during shipping since the compass came in a hard case (which didn't show any wear), but rough shipping seemed like the best explanation

The case itself is very sturdy, and it has survived being tossed around and crushed inside the backpack of a grad student in an English MA program (I have a lot of books to carry around during paper season)
