After I had put in the sim card and transferred my number to Straight Talk, I could use the iPhone to access the internet via free wi-fi hotspots, but couldn’t make/receive calls or text messages.

Note that I had to find a free wifi hotspot in order to access the internet to activate my data service…which would then give me access to the internet
