I had to add some wooden spacers between my top hinge and the wall so that the gate would reach.

" off.-If installing against a wall like I was find a stud and put the hinge side on that stud.-Attach the hinges to the gate and have someone hold them and the gate upright along the stud at the height you want.-Look at where the lower rail on the latch side meets the wall.

You should NOT have the only the top touching the wall and the bottom one hanging in the air or visa versa.8

Also, if you have wooden/metal railing on the bottom of your staircase instead of wall you'll need to construct a slab of wood or metal in the railing so the hardware can be mounted properly

We tried a few and they were disastrous and damaged the walls.
