White chalk markers work best - don't bother with dry erase crayons or any darker colored dry erase markers or chalk markers.

I tried using standard dry erase markers but I couldn't see the writing, so I ended up buying the liquid chalk markers from the same company and they worked like a charm

You can use both the dry erase markers and the bistro chalk markers on this.
