It will occasionally lose some data, and if you drop the controller on a hard surface you can lose it all.

I reccomend against getting 3rd party, it doesnt pay to take the chance of losing your hard earned data to save a few bucks

I am guessing that if the battery dies, your data saved on it becomes inaccessible until you replace it
