Overall it is a good value for a nice, quiet, sturdy drive.

Shoot a ton of video on site, transfer it to this portable hard drive, and then take it back to my desktop for editing.

The WD website has software for transferring files from this Mac formatted drive to a Windows (NTSF) machine, so if you have both this drive will play well with them.

Very convenient, and maintains the free space on my desktop's hard drive

But it's a bit of an enigma, because it's small dimensions and modest capacity would seem to make it an ideal portable drive to use with my macbook, but it really isn't suitable for that because it's case is quite flimsy and brittle.

To fix the Read-Only issue I used the WD Drive Utilities app to erase the drive.

Shoot a ton of video on site, transfer it to this portable hard drive, and then take it back to my desktop for editing.

The drive stays relatively cool when in operation and automatically goes off after 30 minutes of non-use.

As I went through the process of partitioning the hard drive, it started out OK, but then it seemed as if the Mac was seeing a larger than 2 TB size and expanded some of the partitions.

I still have USB 2.0 hard drives that is almost 10 years old and still function well

I suppose if one didn't have much capacity needs, it could function as a capable cost-effective backup drive for a desktop, or for a laptop that doesn't travel much.
