The drive is very quiet inside my Mac Pro mounted under my desk..

This is a storage drive for me, but I hate these cruddy drives with 2 yr warranties storing my stuff.

The drive is working well as a backup drive in a hot-swap, front panel mounting.

In my life I have probably purchased, formatted and installed more than 100 3.5 inch computer hard drives, starting back when these only came in a few megabytes.

Well I can say this hard drive did not cause any problems

But after reading many of the other reviews here and elsewhere, I just can't trust this as my primary drive in this system.

I understand that, statistically, at certain number of drives of any type - even solid state drives - will be DOA.

I've only ever had one fail in that time and it was a 1TB drive, WD replaced that failed drive with a 2TB drive.

When it comes to sata hard drives, I would never use anything else.

Once you've used a good SSD, it can't compare, but this drive has been solid so far and does what I expected it to do.

I've found Western Digital drives to be the best for speed and reliability, but this one is pretty noisy.

FWIW, I've had 5 main hard drive failures over the last 25 or so years, and 4 of them have been Western Digital drives.

These Western Digital Black drives are top-of-the-line quality

Edit: Transferring data from my SSD to this WD driver is around 750 mb/s - nice fast drive for being a platter drive.

That dubious distinction goes to the IBM "Deathstar" hard drive that drove IBM to sell of that arm of their business (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HGST_Deskstar).

It reads and writes very fast and my only two downsides with it is that its a pretty loud hard drive
