Needless to say all the data was lost

Suddenly and out of nowhere, my PC doesn't recognize it and wants me to reformat it, which will erase all the data on it.

; it took another day for them to tell me that basically I had to pay a professional data recovery service to recover my data, then reformat again

Also, if you're using this and the power goes out, you will likely lose data.

More importantly, I lost data twice and recovery of data is very expensive

Having recently suffered a computer crash that was near catastrophic, I wanted to make sure my data would be protected.

It had seemed a good buy for the price and the amount of space on it, but now I've lost some valuable data

All data is readable without the WD drive controller as it was with the WD drive controller.

So now I have to pay someone a stupid amount of money to try and recover the data before I can try to reformat, don't even know if it will work.

Lost all my data.

It is so sensitive to being properly unmounted and mounted that if you accidentally pull the USB out without unmounting it first, you will likely lose data.

To use it you have to plug USB cable and also an AC (lets say data and electricity).A good point and also a bad one

We tried to recover the data off of this drive and it then died too

The disk errors pollute the event logs and create an unstable situation and corrupt data... even though I've used tools to map around the bad sectors

Got it as a drive to backup my data and works just fine with NovaBackup

Now they are both RAW and of course no easy way to recover the data

but all the data was still lost

It is the perfect central data source for all my systems, making working in different places a breeze

The main problem is that it can and likely will lose your data.

So I tried the HD write zeros test (which destroys the data on the drive) and it found the drive was bad; and then the extended test agreed after the zero write failed.

Couldn't recover data which has a lot of my photos and documents using a partition recovery software

Already lost my data once because of unnecesary hardware encryption, external drives are for keeping data safe, most users don't need to encrypt data and that "feature" should be optional

The only reason I'm buying this drive (again) is in the hopes that I can open it up and use the disk controller to help recover data from the original one I purchased less than two years ago

A technician recommended me to use an external hard drive as a back up, just in case I could lose the data, and it is doing a great job.

Disappointing, fortunately all my data was still on my machines and I purchased Toshiba portable hard drives to back up now, hopefully they will be more durable

No extremley loud scratching, No clicking, Nothing out of the ordinary, but I wanted to verify the drive was good because 2 of the 3 last drives I have purchased have been bad with SMART data or just horrible grinding and clicking on day one, Needless to say they was returned ASAP

That is the ONLY way to get your data back if the case fails and it costs over $1,000 to have this done

I'm still hopeful that I will be able to recover the backup data on the disk, but I won't buy another WD disk, and I've been told for recovery it would have to be another WD disk

Can't even express my frustration in type as all the data I've had in the last few years (photos, documents, music/movie files and backups) live in this small housing that fails for absolutely no reason.

I started paying for online storage as that works out to be cheaper option than buying these drives; you end up storing lots of data on these and when they fail, you end up losing twice - cost of the hard drive and data.

I had a little scare with it trying to reformat once, but overall it looks like it's automatically backing up all my data.

(1) at three feet, the USB cord is pretty short for a standard desktop setup; (2) you are stuck with WD's 3-foot USB cord because it is a directional "USB 3.0 A to micro B cable" (as opposed to a standard USB A male-to-male cable), so if you want a longer USB cord, be sure to order this type ahead of time; (3) a BIG surprise...when directly using the WD backup software, Windows 10 won't allow you to backup a System Image of your computer, which is a critical restore drive D: (4) if you want System Image backups you will need to disable the backup feature on

it continues to work as it should.

So far there are no problems and it works as it should

4TB has left me with no concern over storage space so I can greedily download all of the Games with Gold titles each month as well as have every purchased game in my collection on the hard drive with tons of extra space.

I wanted to post this to help others who may have encountered the sleep/wake problem with this device as well as those that may be contemplating buying this and should be aware of the issue up front.
