Truthfully, it's really hard to review a hard drive; what can you say?

I made an uninformed initial purchase of a WD Blue Hard Drive for my surveillance DVR, it would intermittently work, maybe 10% of the time

I don’t have any empirical data for noise, but the hard drive activity never became audible above the hum of the CPU fan in my desktop

Well, ironically, this WD hard drive wasnt recognized by a legacy Dahua DVR, so any attempt on my part to review this product is fruitless

During the 15 hour test of constant writing and reading, the drive was only slightly warm to the touch.

Hard drive has been working in our security dvr for months now without any issues

6TB for extending my Directv HR54 internal hard drive of 1tb to this 6tb

I use the 2TB for AHD/DVR/NVR security systems with SATA II (maximum HD capacity allowed is 2TB) hard drive systems for 720p or 1080p resolutions with 8 camera channels

This hard drive failed within 3 months and unfortunately there is no alert when this happens.

However, using the less-expensive green drives would incur a notable performance decrease

I like WD hard drives and have not had any trouble so far with them.

The original drive failed after three years, which was a bit disappointing, but hopefully this one will last longer.

Task Manager in Windows 8.1 shows the drive is barely working, never exceeding 1% utilization, and this is after filling the drive probably 20 times over to the point it was highly fragmented.

I use my drives for streaming movie and TV show files and the way streaming works is that it buffers a minute or two of the movie then lets the drive go idle

Lesson learned: don't use a single bay drive for backup and don't use Western Digital Purple hard drives.

The drive works OK but my Directv DVR stutters fairly often (every 30-60 minutes) with this

In case you're wondering why CPU usage dropped, it's because my system was being bottlenecked by the hard drive and it was trying to write to a drive that couldn't keep up with the task thus causing higher than normal CPU usage

With any CCTV security system, the hard drive is one of the most critical system parts and must provide dependable service (this is one part you do not want to scrimp on or depend of the typical computer type hard drive)

After you install the drive, you can not wall mount the NCR since the hard drive uses the same mounting holes.

So, if you are using this as a data, streaming music, video source, this is the perfect drive.

I got this to increase my recording capacity for my Directv DVR HR44/500 along with the Anker USB 3.0 & eSATA to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station

For a hard drive that is designed to run in a DVR, it should last longer.

The install was a breeze, just slide the WD Purple hard drive into the Anker or the docking station of your choosing, connect the eSATA cable from the Anker/docking station to the Directv DVR eSATA port (make sure DVR is turned off by unplugging it), turn on the Anker/docking station, then plug in and turn on the Directv DVR

Drive is very quiet and can't hear it spinning.

The drive was easy to install, and holds surveillance video for over a month.

I also highly recommend a RAID 10 configuration with a good Adaptec (or other reputable brand) RAID controller card to ensure that you can write the video streams to the hard drive fast enough when you have multiple surveillance cameras and/or high definition resolution streams.

This is accomplished through the "ATA Streaming Command Set."The slow 5400 RPM rotation means that this Purple drive is very quiet (this is its best feature, if you're using it for a Home Theater system and need a super quiet environment) and it generates less heat than a 7200 RPM drive in continuous operation

In other words, it gives hard drives a pretty good workout.

What I will say is that Western Digital is the only hard drive I will use for my computer builds

Maybe after the logo on your hard drive where it says

Amazon combined my hard drive order with a separate order of books without my consent.

I purchased it mainly because it is quiet, and I built an HTPC, so I didn't want the hard drive spinning to interfere with the audio in the movie.

It hasn't been long enough for me to say confidently that this drive has solved my problems, but I'm very hopeful.
