The IcePack mounting frame is basically a heat sink chassis (which increases the noise of the drive) with a connection extender - it extends the sata and power connections from the drive itself to the outside of the frame, using a little board fabbed just for this purpose

I have read a few people giving this drive less stars cause they couldn't put it in their laptop, clearly they can't read the instructions, this is not a 2.5" drive, it's a 3.5" drive, the surrounding heat-sink is required as a whole for this hard drive
