Of course if you try to break the lead you will, but I have yet to have the lead break while writing on a stable surface (think table instead of a leg).My partner heavily prefers using pen, and rarely if ever elects to use pencil, but even he liked the way it wrote and actually wanted to get one for himself.

Amazingly it protects my led from breaking as I tend to hold my pencils with a tight / strong grip.

Don't overload the refill slot with too many leads as it will tend to clog the mechanism and won't uptake new sticks as needed
