  • Check out YouTube - there are several videos by skilled players that demonstrate just what this instrument is capable of.
  • Other than that it is a fantastic instrument to pass some time with.
  • This is a very fine instrument so don't be put off by it's simple design.
  • Also the two-toned case, along with the etched design, makes this a very beautiful instrument

  • I've tried to list a few of the pros and cons, because I appreciate fair reviews when I buy stuff
  • I read the reviews on several of these and decided on this one because 1) positive reviews; 2) number of keys (shows my knowledge of music, I suppose); and 3) price

Reviews around tone (5.00 of 5)

  • The tone is surprisingly lovely, once you get it tuned
  • The tones are sweet and, depending on the pressure of your stroke, soft and subtile or very loud and clear

Reviews around instruction (5.00 of 5)

  • As someone who has never played an instrument before, this was a great start as it gave clear instructions on how to play, how to tune, and what each key represents with stickers to help out
  • Regardless, the instructions for tuning the Kalimba are very clear and easy to follow

Reviews around quality thumb (5.00 of 5)

  • Pretty good quality Thumb Piano, my only issue is that some of the keys on one of the pianos I purchased appear to be damaged along the length of them

  • The guy from Kalimba magic does explain how to do this on his site, but it's in something explaining how to change this Kalimba into a different one

Reviews around music (5.00 of 5)

  • There is a double therapeutic value: 1) making your own beautiful light music (unique in our consumer/spectator society), and 2) alternating R-L hand activity actually helps balance the nervous system

Reviews around sound (3.61 of 5)

  • The sound is rich and clear
  • It has a beautiful sound.
  • This is easiest to play if you have a very little length to your fingernails, so that you can get a louder sound, but still playable without them.
  • Pure rich sound, easy on the hands

More about 17-Key Thumb Piano

  • Color:Kalimba17 Rosewood thumb piano, 5" x 7", 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back
  • The thumb piano originates in Africa
  • It is also known as the mbira or likembe
  • The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber
  • To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms
  • Cover the vibrato holes with your fingers
  • Then pluck the keys with your thumbs
  • As you play you can un-cover and cover the vibrato holes as you like
  • Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference
  • Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning
  • Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player
  • The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches
  • The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their length, and therefore their pitch
  • "Scratch & Dent" or "Blemished" products are denoted by a "-2" after the product code
  • They are New and Unused but are considered Second Quality
  • This means that there is some esthetic irregularity
  • The irregularities may include, blisters in the shellac finish, stains, scratches or dents, discoloration in the wood or finish, rust or pitting on metals, imperfect glazes, manufacturer's repairs, or some other mark on the surface
  • The irregularity does not affect the playability or sound quality of the instrument
  • As with any scratch & dent offer, these are a great value.
