The sound from a defective unit is an annoying low-pitch high-frequency/sonic sound that almost sounds like a small insect or tiny mouse, and the sound goes off every 4 or 5 seconds like clockwork

restarting the unit corrected the issue.

Worst-case, you might have to call APC and have them mail you a new unit, and you'll have to bring the defective unit to FedEx store or pick-up location for a free-shipment back to APC

Unfortunately even in May 2018, the unit that I received from Amazon DID have the defect (the unit that Amazon sold me was manufactured on October 30 2017 per the APC diagnostic label that comes with every APC UPS battery that you purchase)

As others have indicated, this unit has a rather atrocious constant high-pitched whine that periodically (once every few seconds or so) ramps up into a louder "chirp"

One criticism is that the front panel doesn't stay lit like my older unit did, so I can't just glance down to see it's status (it only stays lit for 1 min and there is no setting to change that)

All other more powerful battery backup units are designed for server racks and aren't designed for residential outlets

When I installed it the unit threw an error and forced my PC to do a hard shutdown (luckily, nothing got fried this time), and when I contacted APC support they told me the unit didn't actually need a new battery cell and had to be replaced

As with all the APC products that I have purchased, this unit was easy to set up (connect battery) and sits silently awaiting a power fluxuation or outage
