Our old unit took a dump and we were able to get the newer version of which has done the job for us to have power on critical equipment

This unit is not carrying a heavy load, just a router and a network backup disk, but it has protected both and kept them running all winter.

I like APC UPS products, but I don't know what APC was doing when they made these cheap units

Normally APC UPS units work well but this unit has two design faults which earned it two strikes/stars off

I ended up hooking up the wires incorrectly, because they are not color coordinated, and smoked the battery back up unit itself.

These devices have small loads so this unit is good for this type of use.

In contrast to APC Back-UPS units I've used previously, the Back-UPS 425VA BE425M does NOT have a user-replaceable battery and the manual recommends taking the unit to an authorized service center when the battery no longer charges.

After working with the manufacturer on some simple APC testing, they determined that the battery back-up unit unit was defective and shipped a replacement unit with pre-paid postage to return the defective unit to them

If your looking for longer lasting batteries with more protection, you're going to have to spring for a nicer unit.

These newer BM450N units are very efficient for small loads (~100W)

4th... and my primary reason for returning the units: when plugged in, these units emit a high frequency exceedingly annoying noise, which I can detect clear across the room

Competitors entered the pure sine wave consumer space first, and at a lower price point.- Other gripes, such as many units running the fan full speed all the time when on battery instead of thermally controlled, very low quality sockets on the units (I've had plugs get stuck in the UPS before!), poor quality software that is rarely updated, proprietary USB connectors, etc.
