I feel this is due to two design flaws: 1) the cheap thermoplastic clips use lose their strength quickly- not being as tiff as they originally were and 2) the end of the clips have a vertical face when they should be angled a bit so they want to catch the air vent if something goes to pull the Garmin device out

These mounts fit on the center air vent and worked perfectly.

Initially the mount had more play/vibration than I cared for; upon closer examination I realized that the mounting clips were making contact with the air vents inner fins, thus not allowing the mounting clips to be inserted far enough.

At first that attachment seemed a little flaky on my air vent, but the little kickstand seems to keep it stable -- even when I'm poking at it (at stop lights, of course)

My friend has a rather bulky GPS mount for the air vent

If mounted to air vents and heat used the alligator clamps will weaken and fail to close over the louvers.

Just be sure that your air vents aren't too fragile as the clips on the mount are very hard to open and could scratch the paint on the vents.
