Thinking about ordering a new antenna for it to have a better range.

Range can be limited, would recommend an extended antenna, especially if you're trying to communicate with anyone from 1970 or earlier

outstanding radio range not good but a good radio.

Without an external antenna or an upgraded antenna the range is fairly limited, but at only 5 watts total output, you're not expecting much.

But the BaoFeng exceeds, as it is useful for Marine channels, and all the rest in the frequencies ranges it specifies

I use this radio on local repeaters in the area and get good signal reports when I'm in fair range of the repeaters on high power

for what this is (a very small, dual band transciever) it has surprisingly good range

Baofeng.. its a little more expensive but the range is pretty good

Be careful that you don't transmit on frequencies you shouldn't because they have pretty good range and are capable of working on business bands as well as emergency and safety service channels.

I plan on keeping an 8 Watt unit in the car with my tram mag mount antenna, it should give decent range to my home base antenna that's on a 55 foot tower

Keep in mind this is not a digital radio, but for such a small device it packs a lot of punch and maintains great power and good range

You will probably want to buy one of the bigger antennas to improve your range

but I would recommend buying an aftermarket antenna for better range and a programming cable and programming it on a computer

As a licensed ham they are great little unit's, I do recommend you purchase after market antennas which will improve your range, I went with the expert power and bought both the 14 inch and 7 inch versions because there are times when you don't need maximum range and the 7 inch version works best for those times
