ANC appears to remove quite a bit of the highs and bass but does seem to do a fair job with the background noise and the seal around your ears is pretty good so it isn't really necessary at all though

I wear them on the bus to and from work, they block out all of the background noise

The transmitted audio is quiet at best and very echoey (although that could just be the environment I'm in) , I did find that if you place your hand over the bottom of the right ear cup with your fingers towards your mouth the audio quality becomes acceptable, but these will pick up all the background noise too, so not great for conference calls etc
