I strongly suggest doing an internet search for popping noises if you plan to use them in a turbulent environment.

There is a small high pitch whine, but it's a product of how loud your environment is, and regardless of where you are, the whine is quieter than the noise you're cancelling

If you are in very loud environments regularly, traveling a lot, or need to knock out all that annoying white noise, yes.

Noise cancelling definitely works when turned on and is superb for moderately noisy working environments.
