They do a great job of cancelling out the very loud road noise from the dual-sport/dirt bike tires I use.
They do a good job of cutting out the background noise on flights and in the office
But the QC20s do such a good job cancelling out environmental noise that you completely lose track of your environment; I found myself easily startled by nearby movements
I see no way around this with noise cancelling headphones, and Bose has done as good a job as can be expected
great job on noise cancelling, and the fit very comfortably in teh ear.

BUT.....these have the typical TriPort muffled sound (exaggerated non-tight bass, almost no highs, decent mids)...which really destroys the listening experience
I was hoping to get the sound isolation of in hear headphones but just amplify the effect with noise cancelling, but the earbuds don't make a proper seal so in conjunction with the strange cancelling, you can still hear quite a lot.-the actually battery device is very closely connected to the jack

Buy these only if you prefer noise cancelling over quality.
Pros- Great noise canceling: definitely points here because the noise canceling on these is amazing, even with no music
The more I use them the more I love the noise canceling
Or, you can try an over-the-ear passive sound reducing ear muff for construction and gun firing and then use either a regular (i.e. non-noise reducing earbud) or a noise reducing earbud for music.
They seemed be best for low repetitive sounds like, planes or trains.
The sound is great, and they cancel out and block more noise than their over-ear counterparts
As far as sound and noise cancelling it works as it is supposed to be.

I was suspicious that the noise canceling would be weak without the headphone cushions, but it's very effective, and the smaller earbuds are much easier for travel than the headphones.
I fly 14 hr transpacific nonstop flights 6-8 times per year so effective noise cancelling earbuds are really important to me.
These are hands-down the absolute BEST BEST BEST earbuds for travelers
