I didn't like it with a solid state
-
I use it to boost an overdriven amp already, by itself on a solid state and pretty much in any application you can think for it because I like to experiment as a bedroom strummer
-
My experience with this pedal is actually a bit different than many of the reviews here; I have primarily used the SD-1 as a distortion pedal with my solid state amp (mid-80's 35W Sidekick Switcher) and a Telecaster with Fender Noiseless pups

sound a bit different, so it could just be my gear, but I have to say that while I love this for a tube-like drive for a solid state amp, it sounds cheesy with actual tubes.
-
i was using a line 6 solid state amp

you have tube or solid state, if you need some serious Tube Driven Overdrive sound with excellent sustain, this is the pedal you want
-
So, overall, a good pedal, definitely 4 out of 5 stars for me... I just prefer it through a solid state- if you're going for tube OD, maybe look into one of the endless "green driver" type pedals.

As with any overdrive, this thing will not sound very good (IMHO) running into a solid state amp.
-
Back then I had cheap guitars with crappy pickups and solid state amps that were thin, sterile, and lifeless.

I bought this pedal used and have used it with both a Fender tube amp and a Marshall solid state using clean channels
