I'm no computer expert, so I can't offer any comments on the technical elements of the adapter, but as a modestly competent computer user, I have found the device easy to use.

I looked at some much cheaper devices available on Amazon that purport to do the same thing, but became skeptical after reading negative reviews about the cheaper devices not working with all drives, not having LED's etc

I decided to go with this more expensive device because the reviews were more convincing that it would probably work

The device just isn't reliable enough to use for anything but saving a few files off an old drive.

I don't recommend this device - instead I would look for a docking stationfor 3.5 inch drives similar to the "StarTech.com USB to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5in SATA HDD"

If there was a drive controller failure, a damaged head/platter or a motor failure - Your drive is DEAD and this device is not MAGIC! - my drives were all operational IDE drives
