An alternative use is the storm radio warning, good if you are out in the park on a picnic or something, or maybe it's time to take the boat back to shore.

It needs to be mentioned that it IS VERY important what channel you are using not only because of the differences in range, but also because currently the FCC actually requires you to get have a license for using the GMRS Channels

I believe the reception is better if the privacy code isn't used
