That said, I think it's not worth buying unless you already own a 802.11ac capable device

The new 802.11ac standard is not quite here, but it is well on its way, and the DIR-850L is a great unit to provide high speed throughput to compatible devices, such as the latest 802.11ac-equipped Apple MacBook Air laptops, and many more wireless electronics to come

Either access point will run at the mode and rate of the SLOWEST device connected to that access point.

I have been a loyal D-link customer for years but that was probably my last product from them.
