Elgato Video Capture - Digitise Video for Mac, PC or iPad (USB 2.0)

    • The hardware and included software are excellent in terms of displaying clear video (and clear audio) on my Mac's screen (running Mavericks).Cons:
    • My 7 year old iMac with an i7 has no issues encoding the video for me at all, even if I use iMovie to render the video afterwards
    • I purchased this without confidence it would be any better, but -- happily -- the videos it converted looked quite dramatically better than they had with the other product
    • The size/rez output of the ElGato is 640x480, but when using the 16:9 Widescreen option it provides an exceptionally decent video & small file size
    • Works great importing video into a MAC
    • The only things I would say would cause me to give it a 4-star review instead of 5 are these: (1) I discovered, after powering through hours and hours of conversions, that the first 5-or-so seconds of the converted video run as if they are in slow-mo, before the speed picks up to normal and the video plays as expected (very weird, and pretty much ruins the really short clips); (2) more "before the save" video editing options would be a huge help, especially the ability to split one longer recording into shorter ones that can be exported as separate files (would save a ton of "babysitting" time for the typical home video -- without this feature, each little segment has to be done as a separate recording, requiring constant attention)
    • The videos look terrific
    • Video is clear and audio is noise free.
    • I bought this first and my videos came out jumpy and sometimes losing color
    • The first VCR I managed to find was terrible so my videos were terrible.
    • The software is simple and does what it needs to do....which is my way of saying don't expect to be able to edit your video very well at all.
    • I found that I was able to strip that off by running the file through the video editor available within Windows Photo
    • Very simple, without a lot of recording options but the key to me is that it works and allows me to move valuable home videos to more stable hard drives in digital form or burn to DVD's.
    • The video and audio on the captured movies aren't bad at all, considering the age of the tapes.
    • The live video is smooth and it records perfectly.
    • But still worth it when you consider how valuable certain videos are.
    • Works well capturing audio and video from movies I recorded on my dvr.
    • Makes clear videos from VHS and Super VHS.
    • That's not to say the videos were flawless, they are copies of old VCR tapes after all
    • Still a little bit grainy video quality.
    • I was always afraid of losing the video
    • After I had the driver software loaded it was a breeze, but I connected the audio and video before I connected it to my computer, the video was fine but the audio was slow, like a old Chinese movie,(the lips would move and then the words)
    • and you'll still end up with great digitally recorded video files with which to entertain family, and bore friends and neighbors. ;-)You do need to connect to a VHS player for tape playback
    • As you can see, the camcorder plays the video clearly but after going through elgato's hardware and software, the video has serious problems as the image "jitters" over and over again making the output video useless
    • Excellent videos, albeit i'm spoiled with hd videos.
    • , I went on YouTube, (how I found out about this product), and after a bit of searching found a helpful video, I guess some of these have software, this one I had to download on line
    • The video editing made it really nice being able to "clip" the begining and end because of starting and stopping delays (trying to split up the video into clips). You can't go wrong here.
    • When playing the 8mm tape directly from the camera, it plays great...smooth video, and good color
    • She would have like to had the software option to break the video's up into chapters but that most have been a different product because this is just a start and capture device and software.
    • Unfortunately, included software doesn't have any options to split the recorded video into multiple nor does it have an ability to cut out unwanted footage in the middle of the video
    • Great way to confer my treasured, irreplaceable videos to electronic format.
    • Not a ton of options but seems to capture great video.
    • Wife is really happy to have video memories of our daughter when shewas young (though she complained that we did not take enough video!!!
    • I was able to use this and it worked fine for the audio but the video was unacceptable.
    • VHS is an outdated standard anyway, but if you're on the fence about converting the tapes you hold near and dear, you should really do so soon because the video is going to degrade more and more over time
    • The Elgato still applies its own proprietary algorithm to create a progressive scan based video for LCD screens to display an approximation to the actual interlaced analog video
    • Both settings have HORRIBLE compression rates, which make the videos look EVEN WORSE then the vhs video you are recording
    • By-passed it and got a clean, HQ video stream.5
    • I would have to plug it in and take it again just to get it working all for it to make these terrible videos
    • I used this to rip my family videos to my computer, and then burn them to DVD for safekeeping
    • Super simple interface, video and sound quality are great
    • At least now the videos won't degrade anymore than they have.
    • this gadget will not enhance your video to dvd-quality.
    • The Elgato device has S-video in as well as regular yellow composite video in.
    • I thought I'd lost my family home videos forever due to changing technology, but this converter allowed me to transfer them to my computer
    • Can easily bring the saved footage into iMovie and create memorable videos.
    • Video is grainy
    • Restart, got a frozen video screen
    • The video is choppy, frames skip and the picture distorts, it is basically unwatchable
    • Excellent videos, albeit i'm spoiled with hd videos.
    • I can save all my beloved childhood videos!
    • Captures video, easy to use, but the quality of the transferred video is poor
    • Works well, and it was easy which is rare, good Mp4 video
    • Otherwise, all this system does is get your content off those nasty video cassettes and onto your computer, where you can do much more with it
    • The end results is good video with very bad audio, which basically means there is no use in using the product
    • In short, it works but is awkward and not too easy to use if you need to rip 3 - 100 videos.
    • Good video capture
    • I have a Sony CCD-TR64 video cam and it would not pick up the video from this camera - was either heavily distorted or gives "no signal"; occassionally the video would barely come through enough where the distortion was less (but not acceptable).
    • I have recommended this to other family members to archive their old videos as well.
    • Loaded about 20 old 8mm videos with my old Sharp video camera via my macbook pro to Lacie external drive
    • I managed to save some precious home videos that were on VHS.
    • video's ready to share same day
    • Good quality video/audio defaulting the video format to mp4 format which is a well known and compatible with several (if not all) types of media software and applications for viewing and editing video.
    • It has plugs for both the RCA jacks as well as the S video.
    • For the price and positive reviews, I was expecting much better video quality
    • The videos are clean with good audio.
    • And, worked pretty good until I got a message (windows dialogue), "Video Capture as stopped working".
    • The only thing it would do was recognize a video source like a VCR to convert from analog to digital
    • worked prefectly to recover video from vhs tapes.
    • Elgato Video Capture is easy to use, and captures clear, crisp video from VHS tapes to my computer.
    • Very Good video
    • Video is clear and audio is noise free.
    • Works as expected and produces good quality video as well
    • I haven't had a single problem transferring old videos to my Macbook so far
    • What a wonderful way to reclaim video to digital...and very easy to use.
    • Instead, you have to convert the files to another video file like wmv (I used Windows Movie Maker), THEN burn the DVD via Windows DVD Maker.
    • A crisp video original (meaning color was good, video in focus, no wavy lines) was converted and came out fuzzy, colors washed out, a black bar down the right side of the screen, and constant side to side roll bars.
    • Also, this device saves video in an mp4 format, good for YouTube and for playing back on most anything
    • video and audio quality perfect!
    • The quality of the output is also dependent on the quality of the VCR, so I'm sure if anything is to blame for less than perfect video
    • The videos are really easy to trim so my parents were able to get the clips they needed with ease
    • The bad:Video seems slightly degraded, probably by lossy compression
    • Also, the software doesn't break the video into separate clips so you end up with a giant clip
    • You basically click a few buttons and you're burning your video.
    • I transferred all the videos to an external hard drive to free up space on my computer
    • I am amazed how perfect old videos can be copied with Elgato and an old VHS
    • I video record astronomical events and extract event timing data to the millisecond which requires clean video with no dropped or duplicated frames.
    • I have a 2012 MAC and now I can save, share and enjoy my old VHS videos.
    • The only way to correct the poor video was to not select the high quality video output
    • The simple editing software allows one to trim the file, cutting off unnecessary video at the beginning and/or end of the main file.
    • Focus was definitely not what we are used to with the High def of today and my lack of video skills is apparent-but this one video was worth the cost
    • Worked great transferring old analogue video from my camcorder to my computer.
    • So you get this good video, then everything warps for a frame or two
    • If you want to do complex video editing you can import the file into iMovie or other programs.
    • if I wanted a return or warranty refund, I'd have to try using a different, "faster", laptop, and then a DVD player, and then download a file, from a link they sent me, run a program and return a zip file containing my computer's log file, all, in addition to, a recording of the blurry/slow video (which I cannot do, because I get an error message).
    • 100 videos perfect video quality was perfect as well
    • Sometimes the video would finish transferring and then the app would infuriatingly freeze
    • I'm completely satisfied with the consistent, reliable video/audio quality, ease of use, small size & affordable price!(Hint-Hint
    • Lines, jumpy video, color distortion, grainy - not worth buying!
    • You won't have any audio issues and the quality will be just as good as the video source.
    • The only way to correct the poor video was to not select the high quality video output
    • When I view videos on my Flatscreen TV directly from the VCR, the videos look fine (for analog).
    • The software makes it really easy to adjust the colors to get the most accurate video you can get from 25 year old cassettes
    • Clear video conversion and well worth the money.
    • Clear video conversion and well worth the money.
    • I've done about 20 videos with it no problems.
    • The conversion was on the poor side, the video on the camera monitor is much better
    • I decided to do this myself and looked at a few video kits that would accomplish this and decided the Elgato system had the best reviews of all the systems I looked into.
    • I wanted to 1.) have a way to convert my tons of VHS and VHS-C videotapes to digital format 2) Be able to edit out the white space and unwanted footage from the videos 3) Be able to burn the videos to DVD format 4) Be able to upload the videos to a share site to share with family and friends.
    • The software is somewhat limiting, but if you're wanting to just rip videos and not think too much about it, this is pretty much perfect.
    • It works ok, throughout the recording the video at times speed up, like it's in fast forward and the sound breaks up quite often
    • Easy to install, easy to use - outputs great video content!
    • I found some great family videos I forgot I had!
    • Good quality video
    • There's a lot of confusing information out there, from FireWire to USB cables (most said it couldn't be done for video transfer), but what seemed promising was A/V to USB transfer
