What I recommend is to use the radar in Auto mode for a few days and then work through the different modes to see what fits best.

I-95 and I-85 through the above States are well known for their strict radar enforcement and the device detected several hidden police equipped cars well before I saw them.

In a small town in Florida known for its' strict enforcement I also detected radars well before I saw the police vehicle.

Other than that, I find this to be a good radar detector and if it ever fails me I will be back to tell you about it.
