It appears that my problem was that they weren't sitting correctly aligned so my machine wouldn't work.

It will stop if the bottom is too full, but you really need to empty the container before it stops as it can jam the machine.

The machine shreds OK, but sounds like a thrashing machine in a cyclone.

The cutters on this shredder are well-machined and I hope not to give them any reason to jam.

It won't break the machine, as they can still be shredded, but a wad of sticky shredded paper builds up around the sensor, only allowing the machine to be run in reverse

This machine was inexpensive, it is much louder than my old one, but it had the silver top and that was why I purchased this particular one.

I often have to keep the machine in the ON position (even though it's not working), keep the paper to be shredded in the slot, and continue to lift the top up, replace, lift, replace -- over and over again, until it engages.
