but I had to defeat the head safety switch with a small screw because I had to continually be slamming the head down on the basket for the switch to close so the shredder would run.

It feels like the internal switch is not moving completely out of the way, thus catching on the paper and not allowing it to feed

When the second shredder arrived, I again followed the instructions, but this time, before I could even start feeding paper, the forward switch was dead

After calling Fellowes Customer support, it seems the tab on the right side of the waste basket has to slip into a slot and depress a little switch for the machine to operate.

He gave me instructions on how to try to get the switch working again (two pieces of paper folded twice, manipulate the switch) and said if it didn't work, call again and they would send a new shredder free of charge

I dont like the switches, they look cheap, and not very durable, as they get stuck.
