Fender does make a special version of the Super Champ with a Celestion Greenback, but I made substantial improvement with the cheaper, Chinese-made Celestion Ten-30 G10R30, which is the stock-issue speaker that Fender puts in the ’68 Custom Princeton Reverb.

In sum, a really good amp can’t be expected at this price point, but with slight modification, extensive tweaking and careful handling, the Super Champ X2 proves adequate.

It is possible to use the Super Champ’s usb port as a recording link, though without benefit of the tube power amp and the speaker, the sound straight out of the digital preamp, even with cabinet emulation, is pretty disappointing and sounds little like the sound through the speaker.

I could highly recommend this Super Champ X2 to anyone thinking about purchasing one.

I purchased the combo version of the Super Champ X2 to be a portable practice amp without giving up too much of the tone of a bigger tube amp.

Out of the box, the Super Champ is a bundle of rattles and fizzes and the setup of the digital preamp will require tweaking with the Fender FUSE software using a usb-linked computer
