The style is less intrusive then the old detectors.

The detector comes with a battery and is ready to install pretty much right out of the package, although I really don't "love" the way the battery is inserted into the device--I cannot tell at a glance which side the Positive connector is on, so once I figured out which way was which, I marked the inside of the battery compartment with a "+" and "-" symbol in fine-point magic marker to make replacing the battery go a lot quicker.

It's a pretty cheap basic smoke detector, but I'm sure it will work if something happens.

Honestly I think the cheap detectors or more sensitive than the expensive ones, and are probably more likely to save your life.
