The second set made me doubt their quality control, the wood was rough in places and bad spots (there were plenty) werefilled with wood putty that didn't match in color

Of course, the quality is inferior: wood is too soft, can break as you put screws in in the pre-drilled holes, but the structure does hold up, so you get what you pay for.

At one point, I used a larger screw than I probably should have and the wood started to crack, but I was able to switch parts without sustaining and significant damage to the bookcase

given how the wood as cracked or screws were unable to gain purchase

So if your looking for a cheap all wood shelf this is worth the price.

While building it, be careful as the wood is a bit flimsy and leads to a bit of wood shavings that gets everywhere

cheap; very slim and cheap wood

I tried screwing in 4 more screws and all but one of them completely split the wood
