Since first being introduced in 2008, the Kala U-Bass has grabbed the attention of bass players and media alike. Bass Player Magazine praised the original U-Bass for its colossal low end and huge fun factor. The Acoustic-Electric U-Ba...
Electronics problems, or upgrades necessary to "make it sound like a Kala" made the price of a "cheaper model" about the same... with no warrentee... because you upgraded it
My Kala is Solid Spruce top and laminate back & sides
Love the idea, maybe someday I'll give Kala another shot.

The only negative is that the pickup isn’t working evenly across all 4 strings - the low E is definitely quieter than the rest
I've had a great deal of fun with this instrument already, and enjoy it enough that I may well get a second ... perhaps a fretless?
First week using it at the JEMS My Hermon Family retreat, it was hard to dial in through my Hartke HA1200 KickBack12 the Low E was weak as was the G com, pared to the A & D strings
The instrument can be played acoustically, but doesn't put out a great deal of volume that way, though it could probably hold it's own beside a classical guitar or lute.

The neck and frets are very nice, it appears to be a quality instrument
The workmanship is beautiful, with a very comfortable and playable neck, with good action and no fret buzz
The only negative is that the pickup isn’t working evenly across all 4 strings - the low E is definitely quieter than the rest

Just darker sounding than either of the Solid Spruce top models I played

I played the Solid Mahogony one a Rumbler and 2 of the Solid Spruce Top ones all in the same day
One minor disappointment for me is, apparently, this hollow body U-bass is not compatible with my Line 6 Relay wireless system
It has a tuner built in, really great tone and plays well.
The bass, however, did have a nice deep tone, but I could barely hear it!

As wonderful as this instrument is, it is remarkable the tone you get when you run it through a bass amp.
I am an old rock and roller and prefer a little less muddy thump and a bit more "clarity and drive" so I have purchased a set of nylon core metal round wound strings especially made for the Kala U-bass that will project a brighter, clearer tone and with more harmonics that are missing in the polyurethane strings
