The sound prevents it from sounding like a clean, crisp, professional recording

I used a headphone amp to boost headphone output (which is too quiet in monitor mode to really use for recording) but this is a common issue with all PC monitoring while recording....

- you're not buying this for any software so get that out of your head, you're buying this because it's a brilliant little piece of hardware that runs off the usb bus (no external power supply needed) making it effectively very handy as a portable recording mechanism if you do say field recording

The Alpha and a Boss ME-25 seem to be all I could ever need for truly portable recording

Seeing the m audio had good enough recording volume and was compatible with Skype I have decided to by another unit from from m audio and return this unit to Amazon.

Despite the hiss, its a good solid beginner interface that you can use to get ideas down and do some amateur recording with, as well as throw in your backpack without worrying about it breaking
