    Linksys WRT54GL Wi-Fi Wireless-G Broadband Router

    • Next I decided to stress test the router further by attempting to stream HD video from drives connected to the routers USB 3.0 port (I tested multiple drives to rule out the possibility of any issue from a faulty drive)
    • We use the USB 3 ports for two 1TB hard drives used as local backups and picture storage
    • If you attach a hard drive to this router make sure it's formatted for NTFS (Windows), FAT32(universal), or HFS+(Mac OS X).You can mount this to a wall with screws placed at 8-1/4" apart or 4-3/32" depending on which way you mount it

    • Also you can make any device into a network device, like an old printer, or an external hard drive, by plugging into the USB 3.0 port found on the router
    • At first there was issues like the router was not recognizing the hard drive attached using the USB and
    • The problem is when you try to use a USB hard drive with a Mac computer
    • I plugged in an external hard drive loaded with music and movies to the USB 2.0 port, and now I can access them from any device in the house, and I didn't have to configure anything.
    • but then I realized that it's because the hard drive was cable through the power eSATA or the USB 3.0 cable which was the problem
    • Also have an external USB hard drive connected as a "cloud storage" that works fine
    • Added 2 Tb external USB hard drive for network backup from all devices
    • It is setup with 2 external hard drives, an eSATA and a USB
    • The external hard drive feature get disconnected after 20 minutes of use (tried 3 different ones) and you have to reboot the device again, etc
    • Fast, reliable and with an external hard drive - a great NAS alternative.
