I re-opened the box of the other defective unit still in my possession for a possible swap and tried that remote

Then I pulled out the useless "NO DISC" CD5005 unit and plugged it in and voila, the remote worked on the defective unit; power ON, OFF, etc

I didn't order it from Amazon, but the outfit that I purchased from were solid citizens and shipped a replacement before I shipped the defective unit back
