my solution was to download Origin (http://www.origin.com/ie/download) which the PC client for most EA games and redeem the product code that came in the box with them and the proceed to download the game from their online server

So the gist of the story is: even though you get a bunch of disks, you might as well throw them in the bin right after you receive them - or alternatively hunt around for a cheap and instant download code
