I found that the focus was quick and smooth and easy to use, as described in Nikon's written material and that the image quality was very good - nice crisp and clear shots

Because this lens reduces your field of view (the smaller the mm the larger your field of view) you can't use it to taking sweeping panoramic shots.

It's extremely versatile - group shots, action, sports and lightweight enough to carry around all day.

My wife has a Nikon D50 and the lens it came with (an 18-70 AF-S zoom) is great for medium focal length shots like portraits, groups of people or generally close quarters

Sometimes the only way to get a shot is with a zoom lensIf you have a lot more money to spend and want cleaner shots and need to work in anything less than daylight, pass by this lens.

I've taken nature shots, shots of the symphony (sitting hin the upper balcony) as well as normal type shots.

It also turns out to be good for taking candid pictures at parties; you can stand far enough away so that people don't feel like you are getting in their face, but you still get good shots

fantastic for most outdoor shots, the manual and auto focus capabilities along with the Vibration Reduction keep your shots crisp and clear.

I prefer the Nikon 35mm f/1.4 DX because it's excellent in low-light and take amazingly crisp shots.

Any lens that can give you memorable shots under those conditions is a winner

You will still get great shots indoors so long as ample light exists or of course you use a flash

did a wonderful job of keeping it steady and getting great shots

but I love the shots I get from it

the vr is key to getting those steady shots at full zoom

I bought this lens because I wanted/needed a lens that would get greater distance shots than the 18-55mm kit lens

I got some really amazing pictures in Europe, like close-ups of the London Eye and shots of the top of the Eiffel Tower that just would not have been possible without this kind of zoom.

It's not my walk around lens, but I have taken nice shots of the kids at the 55 mark.

This is very disappointing, and great shots have been ruined by 'spots' on the lens that will not go

I will agree that the autofocus is a little on the slow side, but I was still able to get some great shots at the air show a few weeks ago

Don't let the price of this lens fool you into thinking it can't compete with more expensive lenses - the VR system in this lens works beautifully allowing you to take fast and blur free shots in decent lighting - I highly suggest getting this lens if you're on the fence between this lens or the 70-300mm VR (more then twice the price) but not twice the reach - lighter and much easier to carry and handle - the ultimate walk around unit - I suggest getting a good external flash unit to complement your camera as well as the lens - as the build-in camera flash are limited for any serious application moving forward in your photographic journey - hope this helps you in your moment of desperations before "pulling the trigger" on this purchase.
