The software function over USB is much easier to configure than classic midi and no longer requires midi capable hardware and cables

I'd say for this budget this is the best MIDI keyboard under $200 that you can buy

I felt like I was ready to make a reasonably informed decision about what might be my best first midi hardware gear purchase.

As somebody with a bunch of synths (Korg Triton, Ultranova, Juno-106, SH-101, DX-7) and an Akai APC40, I've been looking for a solid midi controller that incorporated Ableton control with a quality playing keyboard

There is an important step after installing, which is in the manual but I missed it at first, that has you set the correct MIDI ins and outs for Abelton

So this is not really a totally portable keyboard but rather a powerful MIDI controller for in studio work, or on the road as a live performance machine using Ableton 9 Live Lite with a plugged in computer/laptop etc

On the outside, it looks like a fairly decent and capable midi controller, and the allure of "inControl," a feature that promises to automatically map the many faders, rotary encoders, transport controls and etc

Overall, a solid midi controller.
