If you don't like Kodi at all there is plex with the shield even having a built in Plex server.

We mostly use Kodi but it all just works, much much better than our old WD TV Live, or GboxQ.

As for games, the newest iteration of game consoles also support 4K (in varying degrees) and will probably satisfy the serious gamer far more than the Shield TV.There is also the home automation aspects that have been introduced in this round of the Shield TV

If you plan on streaming any 4K content I would recommend using connection over Ethernet cable over wireless, but other than that the WiFi connection in the 2017 Shield works fine.

Coming from my 4K Roku which overheated all the time to the point of having to keep a fan on it is nice!!

This device does set my TV in HDR mode through my Amp and starts to play content through Netflix but it freezes from time to time when playing Netflix HD, 4K, and HDR content.
