(OLD MODEL) Seagate Central 4TB Personal Cloud Storage NAS STCG4000100

    • Some specific troubles I had: I tried to set up user account to enable secure folder and remote access
    • The folder that the other folder was in stopped responding, and another file transfer stalled up
    • Even if you do, private folders (with passwords) may not be accessible.
    • The default user permissions are pretty bizarre (signed-in users can't are read-only on the "Public" directory?!), so you'll need to ssh and chmod all the folders -- definitely a downside for a plug-and-play drive, but nothing a that should deter anyone that has used a terminal/shell/CLI before.
    • It is set up so that there is a "Public Folder" on it, and you can set up individual, password-protected personal folders as well.
    • There are security features like password protecting a folder
    • My TV can access only files on the public folder and not files from the secured folders.
    • So, in effect, the entire Public folder becomes the main media serving folder for the network, and accessible via any DLNA client
    • Maybe I still need to mess with it, but I don't like that only one user at a time can be connected to your secure folder.
    • The problem is that only the public folder is accessible over the internet.
    • There are files and folders which magically lose their permissions (even though I am connected as an administrator to all devices and I tried using the paragon NTFS for mac utility)
    • It shows up in my network devices in Win 8.1 and both my Public and private personal folder are accessible.
    • Even after I cleared out the public folder, it still takes work to get it to recognize files I've recently added
    • These folders are only accessible from computer/laptop where you can enter password not from network devices(SMART TV) which can access network storage
    • There is a Public folder available to anyone on your network.
    • This drive does that, and allows me to simply copy and paste my important folders right into the drive from windows explorer (and retrieve them as easily). As for our family, we have accumulated quite a lot of photos and other media over the years
    • Unfortunately, this device is S-L-O-W, as in REALLY SLOW
    • Transferred all my content over (right under 3TB worth [using the 3TB Seagate Central]) and even though it has a very slow r/w speed compared to most other drives I've used at least it actually worked as a backup drive.
    • I've rechecked everything on my network, everything is connecting at 1GBit per the router lights, and this is the only device on my network that is showing this poor R/W performance
