The human skills include the ability to lift heavy things, increase durability, upgrade weapons and the like

it has a well designed world, strong ability to interact and navigate in the evironment, good enemy

until you gain/unlock certain abilities

I love the storyline and the ability to choose your own ending based on your mission / side missions during the game

Why do they have needles in neuromods to shove stuff into my eye just to gain an ability?

A progression system lets you acquire and improve abilities, eventually leading to some very dark and macabre powers.
