It does not hinder the audio quality of the recording in any way.

I find with this on, the quality is much better with it off, so I just keep it on the whole time

I personally prefer to record my audio separately, off camera, with a zoom or a tascam, and then sync back in post, but i have found that for certain situations (especially run and gun type filmmaking) that is not always possible, and it's nice to have a good backup of at least decent quality audio with the rode on the camera at all times, just in case something goes wrong with my other audio options

It does add size to your recording setup, but the quality of sound you get back is worth the trade off.
