If you want a good, cheap, quick fix noise cancelling headphone, I would recommend this product if you want something a bit more and extra I would go for a higher priced for more better quality.

These are not audiophile quality phones (I have the fabulous open-back Grado SR80s for home use); rather, I use the Sonys for travel and the noise cancelling circuit works as well as any of them do, and also increases volume and bass presence (necessary as I thought I read somewhere that the ear perceives less bass in a pressurized airplane cabin)

Due to there being next to no sound for the headphones to pickup and therefore 'cancel', I would say that it's just a little bit of trickery as there would certainly not be enough sound in the environment to make the noise cancelling that effective
