    Synology 6 Bay NAS DiskStation - DS1618+ (Diskless)

    • These are very reliable (with the right drives, anyway--I now use HGST Deskstar
    • I had built a storage server using LSI raid controller with many hard drives.
    • The only way to load folders onto your hard drives (rather than individual files) is to drag and drop.
    • I FINALLY made the LEAP 😂.For YEARS, I’ve looked at both the Synology & the QNAP, and after a recent “disaster” I decided to buy this product (a few YouTube videos/reviews also helped as well).Let me go though my [usual] review, where I list The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of my experiences (and, of this product).My disaster came with a huge thud, when my beloved Drobo 5D started giving me WEIRD drive errors, where my digital “life” came into peril
    • Beyond notifications about power events and pending SMART failures on hard drives, this one offers notifications about firmware updates, general system status, drive capacity, and a lot of other options
    • No more cramming hard drives into my PC to store everything.
    • It's expensive up-front, but it allows me to buy hard drives in smaller capacities
    • After long research, I bought the DiskStation DS2415+ 12-Bay NAS Server diskless, and I populated its hard drives by myself
    • It's already been a huge help when I've had to download assets needed while I've been out of town (whereas in the past, if they weren't on my portable drive, I waited until I got home or re created them)
    • I also changed the fans (NF-F12 industrialPPC-2000, 3pin) since I am using 7200rpm hard drives.
    • I use it primarily as a file server, and it replaced several external hard drives
    • I removed the hard drives from the old unit, and put them in the new one
