I am using it with WD hard drives and it works well

However, once a compatible drive is plugged in the sharing capabilities of this router is very capable for the price.

A few of my favorites: you can use a USB 3.0 hub to use multiple hard drives, you don't have to switch between 5ghz and 2.4ghz

I have another hard drive on there that I use for general storage

I have my whole house wireless and was able to set up my own personal version of Dropbox by sharing files and uploading things from my phone and computers to a USB external hard drive.

I don’t use it attached to a hard drive as a network server,

Not every drive is supported when plugged in to the router, especially RAID setups.

A better strategy would have been making an incompatible drive list instead.

I also bought this router to connect an external hard drive to so I could have one place to save and retrieve documents/files.

I use the hard drives to back up my MAC using Time Machine

The one one the side is good for flash drives but not for something permanent like hard drive

I use it as WiFi router and also hookup an external hard drive for Mac Time Machine backup

Synology provides a list of compatible drives but that list is very tiny and user driven.

Nice just connecting to a hot spot with my laptop and securely sending gigs of files to my home hard drive as a backup over night.

Plugged in a 1TB hard drive and was able to backup pro photography work while in the field.

Handy USB 3.0 & 2.0 slot right on the router for connecting external devices (i.e. external hard drives) & even an SD Card slot.

Wow, after Linksys, D-Link, TrendNet and 3 separate models of Asus router (right on through to the RT-AC88U) I think I finally found one that works properly without constant hiccups
