Each group has a list of things you can do to gain influence (playing juice pong will earn you influence as a jock, for example), and the more you gain, the more rewards you'll unlock - including an extra trait, free items, or new interactions

so the new objects and interactions they have available with this EP are great to me

I love all the new interactions, the customizations, and the new jobs.

I love the social groupings and the smart phone interactions

In terms of age-appropriateness, I'd say upper teens and that parents need to exercise discretion; I can easily imagine that some parents might object to the more mature interactions
