I noticed the same effect on an excellent but very bright modern instrument--with Evah Pirazzi strings it was very metallic and very loud under the ear, though listeners told me it sounded great at a distance

The E in particularly is much better.

I switched back to an Evah Pirazzi gold E string and no whistling
