It is self-powered via the USB connection, it does accurately transfer files at proper USB 3 speeds according to my benchmark tests and doesn't get hot like some cheap card readers do

Like the mini Transcend TS-RDF5K reader we purchased, this "Super Speed" TS-RDF8K reader did not work properly with our Macs

Note that the Kingston never failed me or caused problems, but I needed more speed, and this works great.

This will work with 2.0 but the speed is so much faster you will definitely want to make sure you use it with 3.0 if given the choice.
