I invest with Fidelity and all of my tax info downloads easily and populates the proper tax forms.

It's inexcusable to have a faulty tax due computation

I have used TurboTax for a number of years covering some fairly complex tax situations.

However, you do not need to pay for electronic tax returns; try searching for "2017 free tax filing" and you'll find several free options to prepare and file your return.

Although I deplore the fact that we have an entire industry devoted to simplifying, explaining and conforming to an unbelievably obtuse tax code, TurboTax greatly reduces the pain of tax filing -- and for that, at least, I am grateful.

If you have a complex tax situation, or have to file multiple state returns in one year, you may be better off going with a trusted tax preparer.

It does not keep an online record, but instead a file record of your tax return, which is annoying for me since I had used the turbotax online version the year before.
